Gua Lou Xie Bai Ban Xia Tang

Category: Formulas that Regulate Qi

Pattern: Lack of chest Yang causing severe formation of Phlegm and blockage, or Cold chest Bi with thin mucus

Key Symptoms: Severe pain the chest that often radiates to the upper back and prevents the patient from being able to lie down comfortably, wheezing, cough with copious sputum, shortness of breath

Tongue: Thick, greasy coating
Pulse: Submerged or wiry and tight

Gua Lou 12g
Xie Bai 9g
Ban Xia 9-12g
Bai Jiu 30-60ml

Preparation: Decoction. Often prepared with equal amounts of wine and water although the original version called for 1 piece of Gua Lou, 1/2 Sheng of Xie Bai (about 100ml) and 7 Sheng of Bai Jiu (1.4L), decocted together until 2 Sheng (400ml) remain.

Actions: Unblocks the Yang, promotes the movement of Qi, expels Phlegm

This is the same presentation as that for Goa Lou Xie Bai Bai Jiu Tang but with more severe symptoms.
