Category: Formulas that Treat Dryness

Pattern: "White Throat (Bai Hou)" or diphtherial disorder in those with constitutional Yin deficiency and internal clumping of Heat who contracts an Epidemic Toxin (Yi Du)

Key Symptoms: Development of a white curd-like membrane in the throat that is difficult to scrape off, swollen and sore throat, fever, dry nasal passages, parched lips, raspy breathing resembling wheezing
Secondary Symptoms: Coughing

Tongue: Red and dry
Pulse: Rapid, usually thin

Sheng Di Huang 6g
Xuan Shen 4.5g
Mai Men Dong 3.6g
Bai Shao 2.4g (dry fried)
Mu Dan Pi 2.4g
Bei Mu 2.4g
Bo He 1.5g
Gan Cao 1.5g

Chuan Bei Mu is the preferred form of Bei Mu used.

Preparation: Decoction. Generally the dosages are increased 2-3 times.

Actions: Nourishes the Yin, clears the Lungs, improves the condition of the throat, relieves toxicity

Contraindications: Diphtheria is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease and in China it is usually treated with a combination of herbs and biomedicine, especially in cases of breathing difficulties.
