Category: Formulas that Tonify Yang

Pattern: Kidney Yang deficiency with waning of Ming Men Fire

Key Symptoms: Exhaustion from long term illness, aversion to cold, coolness of the extremities, impotence, spermatorrhoea, aching and weakness of the lower back and knees
Secondary Symptoms: Infertility, loose stools (sometimes with undigested food), incontinence, oedema of the lower extremities

Zhi Fu Zi 6-18g
Rou Gui 6-12g
Lu Jiao Jiao 12g
Shu Di Huang 24g
Shan Zhu Yu 9g
Shan Yao 12g (dry fried)
Gou Qi Zi 12g (dry fried)
Tu Si Zi 12g
Du Zhong 12g
Dang Gui 9g

In the UK Lu Jiao Jiao must be substituted with Rou Cong Rong and Xu Duan. Fu Zi must also be substituted with other Yang tonics depending on the presentation.

Preparation: Decoction.

Actions: Warms and tonifies the Kidney Yang, replenishes the Essence, tonifies the Blood

Contraindications: Kidney Yang deficiency with Dampness or Turbidity
