Pattern: Vigorous Heart Fire injuring the Blood and Yin

Key Symptoms: Insomnia, continuous palpitations, sensation of irritability and heat in the chest, desire to vomit without result, dream disturbed sleep

Tongue: Red at tip
Pulse: Thin and rapid

Zhu Sha 15g (Aqueous trituration)
Huang Lian 18g
Dang Gui 7.5g
Sheng Di Huang 7.5g
Zhi Gan Cao 16.5g

Zhu Sha is no longer used due to its toxicity. The only real alternative available in the UK is Hu Po.

Preparation: The first four herbs were ground into powder and formed into pills that were covered with Zhu Sha and taken in 6-9g doses.

Actions: Sedates the Heart, calms the Shen, drains Fire, nourishes the Yin

Contraindications: Long term use, or where Yin deficiency is the primary condition
