Da Huang Xiao Shi Tang

Rhubarb and Saltpeter Decoction

Category: Formulas that Drain Downward

Pattern: Damp-Heat (with Heat predominating) in Yangming that is damaging fluids the Jueyin; Damp-Heat with Blood Stagnation.

Key Symptoms: Jaundice with abdominal fullness, inhibited urination that is red and spontaneous sweating
Secondary Symptoms: Uterine fibroids, hard enlarged masses with fixed pain.


Ingredients

Da Huang 12g
Xiao Shi 12g
Huang Bai 12g
Zhi Zi 15g

Subsitutions:
Xiao Shi is usually substituted with Mang Xiao and sometimes Mu Li.

In the UK all of these substances are prohibited and must be replaced. Yu Li Ren will imitate Mang Xiao's capacity to promote defecation and drain Damp-Heat; Hai Zao and Kun Bu will soften hardness; while San Leng may be effective for breaking up accumulations of Blood Stasis in gynaecological conditions; and Jin Qian Cao will be a superior substitute for calculi.


Preparation: Decoction.


Actions: Clears Heat and drains Dampness, breaks up accumulations and regulates Blood

Contraindications: Avoid in pregnancy and deficient constitutions
