Gua Lou Gui Zhi Tang

Trichosanthis and Cinnamon Twig Decoction

Category: Formulas that Release the Exterior

Pattern: Wind-Cold Attacking the Exterior (Tai Yang Zhong Feng) with Deficiency of Ying and Wei with neck and shoulder stiffness and pain

Key Symptoms: Neck pain and stiffness and inhibited side to side turning,
fever and chills unrelieved by sweating with spontaneous perspiration, nasal congestion
Secondary Symptoms: Body aches, dry heaves, headache

Tongue: White coat
Pulse: Floating, moderate or slow.


Ingredients

Tian Hua Fen 6g (Gua Lou Gen)
Gui Zhi 9g
Bai Shao 9g
Gan Cao 6g
Sheng Jiang 9g
Da Zao 36g (12 pieces)


Preparation: Decoction.


Actions: Releases Wind-Cold from the muscle layer, relaxes and moistens the Sinews, regulates the Ying and Wei



Notes:
One liang is taken as 3g in modern sources but in Eastern Han times it was equivalent to 13.875g. This means that the dosages in classical formulae could have been more than 4x what is given today making them far higher than recommended safe dosages today but prompts consideration of what an effective dose may be (He, 2013).
