Author: Zhang Zhong-Jing, 張仲景

Year: c. 220

Source: Essentials from the Golden Cabinet (Jin Gui Yao Lue, 金匱要略)

Category: Formulas that Regulate Qi

Pattern: Painful Obstruction of the Chest due to lack of chest Yang causing formation of Phlegm and blockage

Key Symptoms: Pain the chest that often radiates to the upper back, wheezing, cough with copious sputum, shortness of breath

Tongue: Thick, greasy coating
Pulse: Submerged or wiry and tight

Ingredients

Gua Lou 12g
Xie Bai 9-12g
Bai Jiu 30-60ml

Preparation: Decoction. Often prepared with equal amounts of wine and water although the original version called for 1 piece of Gua Lou, 1/2 Sheng of Xie Bai (about 100ml) and 7 Sheng of Bai Jiu (1.4L), decocted together until 2 Sheng (400ml) remain.

Actions: Unblocks the Yang, promotes the movement of Qi, expels Phlegm

Notes:
One liang is taken as 3g in modern sources but in Eastern Han times it was equivalent to 13.875g. This means that the dosages in classical formulae could have been more than 4x what is given today making them far higher than recommended safe dosages today but prompts consideration of what an effective dose may be (He, 2013).
