Huang Qin Tang

Scutellaria Decoction - PHY906

Category: Formulas that Clear Heat

Pattern: Heat constraint in Shaoyang that overcomes Yangming

Key Symptoms: Fever, bitter taste, dry throat, abdominal pain
Secondary Symptoms: Dysentery with pus, blood or sticky phlegm

Tongue: Red sides, yellow coat
Pulse: Flooding, or wiry, forceful and stirring in the middle position
Abdomen: Focal distention in the epigastrium, hypertonicity of rectus abdominis muscle


Ingredients

Huang Qin 9g
Shao Yao 6-9g
Zhi Gan Cao 3-6g
Da Zao 4-12pcs


Preparation: Decoction.


Actions: Clears Heat, alleviates dysentery, harmonises the middle burner, stops pain



Notes:
Has recently been used as an adjuvant to help with diarrhoea and nausea from chemotherapy but has revealed improved rates of tumour reduction and possible anti-cancer activity itself (Lam et al, 2010, 2015).

One liang is taken as 3g in modern sources but in Eastern Han times it was equivalent to 13.875g. This means that the dosages in classical formulae could have been more than 4x what is given today making them far higher than recommended safe dosages today but prompts consideration of what an effective dose may be (He, 2013).
