Category: Formulas that Tonify Yang

Pattern: Shaoyin disorders with Kidney Qi and Yang deficiency and insufficient Ming Men Fire; Xiao Ke due to Lower Jiao deficiency failing to control water

Key Symptoms: Lower back pain, weakness of the extremities, a cold sensation in the lower half of the body, either difficult urination with oedema or or excessive urination to the point of incontinence
Secondary Symptoms: Irritability, shortness of breath

Tongue: Pale, swollen with thin white coating
Pulse: Frail, submerged and faint in the proximal position
Abdomen: Tense lower abdomen


Ingredients

Sheng Di Huang 24g
Shan Zhu Yu 12g
Shan Yao 12g
Fu Ling 9g
Ze Xie 9g
Mu Dan Pi 9g
Bao Fu Zi 3g
Gui Zhi 3g

Subsitutions:
In UK Fu Zi must be substituted. The most suitable substitute depends on the circumstances (e.g. Xu Duan & Du Zhong for deficiency back pain, Xian Mao & Yin Yang Huo for Bi syndromes, Tu Su Zi for incontinence, diarrhoea and to replenish Essence, Bu Gu Zhi for incontinence, diarrhoea or breathlessness, etc).


Preparation: Traditionally made into small pills with honey and taken in batches of 15 twice per day with wine. Often commonly made into a decoction today.


Actions: Warms and tonifies Kidney Qi and Yang

Contraindications: Yin deficiency with dry mouth and throat, and a red tongue with no coating



Notes:
Classically referred to as Cui's Eight Ingredient Pill, it is now commonly known as Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill from the Golden Cabinet).
