Ju Pi Zhu Ru Tang

Tangerine Peel and Bamboo Shavings Decoction

Category: Formulas that Regulate Qi

Pattern: Constrained Heat in the Stomach with Qi deficiency

Key Symptoms: Hiccups, nausea, dry heaves, retching

Tongue: Maybe tender and red
Pulse: Maybe deficient and rapid


Ingredients

Chen Pi 9-12g
Zhu Ru 9-12g
Ren Shen 3g
Gan Cao 3-6g
Sheng Jiang 4-6sl
Da Zao 5pc


Preparation: Decoction.


Actions: Directs rebellious Qi downwards, stops hiccup, augments the Qi, clears Heat

Contraindications: Heat from excess, Cold from deficiency



Notes:
One liang is taken as 3g in modern sources but in Eastern Han times it was equivalent to 13.875g. This means that the dosages in classical formulae could have been more than 4x what is given today making them far higher than recommended safe dosages today but prompts consideration of what an effective dose may be (He, 2013).
