Category: Formulas that Clear Heat

Pattern: Formed or unformed Heat in the Middle Jiao with blazing Heat in the Upper Jiao

Key Symptoms: Sensation of heat and irritability in the chest and abdomen, thirst, flushed face and red lips, mouth and tongue sores, sore throat, swollen tongue, red eyes, nosebleed, constipation, dark and scanty urination, delirious speech (in severe cases)

Tongue: Red body or edges with dry yellow or white coating
Pulse: Rapid, maybe slippery


Ingredients

Da Huang 9g
Mang Xiao 9g
Gan Cao 9g
Huang Qin 4.5g
Zhi Zi 4.5g
Lian Qiao 18g
Bo He 4.5g

Subsitutions:
In the UK Mang Xiao must be substituted with Yu Li Ren.


Preparation: Originally ground into powder and taken in 6-12g drafts three times per day with a small amount of honey and 3g of Dan Zhu Ye. Can also be prepared as a decoction with the dosages given.


Actions: Drains Fire and unblocks the bowels by clearing the Upper Jiao and draining the Middle Jiao

Contraindications: Can readily injure the Spleen and Stomach Qi so Mang Xiao and Da Huang should be removed one the constipation has resolved.
