Yin Chen Si Ni Tang

Virgate Wormwood Decoction for Frigid Extremities

Author: Zhang Lu-Yu / Shi-Wan

Source: Comprehensive Medicine According to Master Zhang (1695)

Category: Formulas that Expel Dampness

Pattern: Damp-Heat emerging from constraint due to Yang deficiency with Internal Cold

Key Symptoms: Yin-type jaundice or Cold-Damp jaundice with a dull complexion and dark yellow sheen, reduced appetite, lethargy and cold extremities

Pulse: Submerged, thin and weak

Ingredients

Yin Chen Hao 4.5g
Pao Jiang 4.5g
Zhi Fu Zi 3g
Gan Cao 3g

Subsitutions:
In the UK Fu Zi has to be substituted with Rou Gui, Gan Jiang or other Yang tonics depending on the presentation.

Preparation: Decoction. At present the dosages are usually doubled.

Actions: Warms the Interior, reinforces the Yang, resolves Dampness and reduces jaundice.

Notes:
One liang is taken as 3g in modern sources but in Eastern Han times it was equivalent to 13.875g. This means that the dosages in classical formulae could have been more than 4x what is given today making them far higher than recommended safe dosages today but prompts consideration of what an effective dose may be (He, 2013).
