Category: Formulas that Expel Wind

Pattern: Sudden Wind Strike (中風, Zhong Feng) due to Liver Yang Rising or stirring of internal Liver Wind

Key Symptoms: Vexation and agitation with hemiplegia, deviated face and mouth, inhibited speech when the patient is still clear minded.
Secondary Symptoms: Spasms and hypertonicity of the affected limbs.


Ingredients

Shi Jue Ming 25-35g (raw, pre-decoct)
Mu Li 20-30g (raw, pre-decoct)
Dai Zhe Shi 20-30g (crude, pre-decoct)
Dan Nan Xing 10g
Zhi Ban Xia 10g
Ju Hong 12g
Fu Ling 15g
Gou Teng 30g (add at end if hypertensive)
Quan Xie 6-9g
Sang Zhi 30g
Hong Hua 10g
Tao Ren 10g
Chi Shao 12g
Bai Shao 12g
Shi Chang Pu 10g
Yu Jin 10g
Zhi Shan Jia 6-9g
Zhu Li Zhi 50-60ml

Subsitutions:
In the UK several ingredients must be substituted. These include:

Shi Jue Ming == Xia Ku Cao
Mu Li == Xuan Shen + Bai Shao + Wu Wei Zi or Tian Ma
Dai Zhe Shi == Xia Ku Cao + Zhu Ru
Dan Nan Xing == Tian Zhu Huang or Tian Nan Xing + Zhu Ru
Quan Xie == Gou Teng + Tian Zhu Huang
Shan Jia == Mu Dan Pi

Overall these would mean replacing the prohibited ingredients with Xia Ku Cao, Xuan Shen, Wu Wei Zi, Zhu Ru, Tian Nan Xing, Tian Zhu Huang, Tian Ma and Mu Dan Pi.


Preparation: Divide the Zhu Li Zhi into two doses and mix in 2 or 3 drops of ginger juice and take with a decoction made of the other medicinals. Also add 0.5-0.75g of powdered Ling Yang Jiao and take it soaked in the decoction (not possible in UK and the substitutes, Gou Teng + Mu Dan Pi, already in the decoction).


Actions: Settles the Liver and Extinguishes Wind, transforms Phlegm and Invigorates the Blood in the Luo vessels.
