Zhi Zi Gan Jiang Tang

Gardenia and Dried Ginger Decoction

Pattern: Heat harassing the upper Jiao with Cold congealing in the middle

Key Symptoms: Fever,slight irritability, abdominal pain, borborygmus, diarrhoea


Ingredients

Zhi Zi 9g
Gan Jiang 6g


Preparation: Decoction.


Actions: Clears and harmonises the middle Jiao



Notes:
Can be used for patients who present with these symptoms after improper purging or for Yang deficient patients who contract a Warm pathogen at the Qi level.

One liang is taken as 3g in modern sources but in Eastern Han times it was equivalent to 13.875g. This means that the dosages in classical formulae could have been more than 4x what is given today making them far higher than recommended safe dosages today but prompts consideration of what an effective dose may be (He, 2013).
