Zhu Ye Cheng Liu Tang

Lophatherum and Tamarisk Decoction

Category: Formulas that Release the Exterior

Pattern: Heat in the Stomach and Lungs due to Yang Toxins damaging the fluids with Wind-Heat obstructing the Exterior

Key Symptoms: Early stage measles, scarlet fever or similar diseases that present with unevenly distributed rashes, cough, wheezing, nasal obstruction and runny nose, slight chills and a sustained high fever, irritability, a stifling sensation in the chest, restlessness or confusion, swollen and painful throat, thirst with dryness of the mouth

Tongue: Thin yellow coating with dry body
Pulse: Floating and rapid


Ingredients

Cheng Liu 15g
Dan Zhu Ye 9g
Mai Men Dong 9g
Jing Jie 3g
Ge Gen 4.5g
Chan Tui 3g
Bo He 3g
Niu Bang Zi 4.5g
Zhi Mu 3g (honey fried)
Xuan Shen 6g
Gan Cao 3g

Subsitutions:
In the UK Chan Tui must be substituted. Increasing the dose of Bo He is the usual method.


Preparation: Decoction. If the symptoms are severe 15g of Shi Gao and a pinch of winter rice can be added (although not in the UK where Shi Gao cannot be used and Zhi Mu must be increased instead).


Actions: Releases the Exterior, vents rashes, clears Heat, generates fluids.
