Laboratory Testing

Symptoms do not always reflect what is happening beneath the surface. In many chronic conditions, measurable improvements in physiology may occur long before noticeable changes in symptoms. Laboratory testing can therefore provide objective information about your health, helping to identify underlying imbalances, establish a baseline, monitor your progress, and refine your treatment programme where necessary.

Laboratory testing is always optional and is not necessary for everyone. Where appropriate, I will recommend the investigations that are most likely to answer a specific clinical question and discuss the available options and costs before any tests are arranged.

Metabolic & Mitochondrial Testing

My particular area of expertise is redox biology and mitochondrial metabolism. I therefore offer several specialist investigations that assess cellular metabolism and mitochondrial function, including:

Where practical, my preferred investigation is the Magdeburg Molecular Detections test because it directly measures mitochondrial function using techniques closely related to those I used during my PhD research, where I investigated the effects of herbal medicines using mitochondrial functional testing. As a result, I have a detailed understanding of what the test measures, how the results should be interpreted, and its limitations.

Because the test requires freshly isolated living blood cells, you will need to arrange a blood draw with a private phlebotomist early in the week so that the sample can be couriered immediately to Germany for analysis. For this reason, the simpler saliva-based assessment from Maven Health is sometimes a more practical alternative.

General Functional Laboratory Testing

I work with several specialist laboratories, providing access to a wide range of investigations covering general health, nutritional status, gut health, hormone function, microbiome analysis, and many other areas. These include:

Many investigations require only saliva, urine, or stool samples that can be collected at home. Others require a blood sample, which can be arranged through a local phlebotomist. I can advise which tests are most appropriate for your circumstances, explain how to prepare, and help interpret the results in the context of your treatment.

Supplement Quality Verification

I can also arrange independent chromatographic and spectroscopic analysis of supplements and nutritional formulas—including those I prescribe— through independent analytical laboratories such as Campden BRI, a UK laboratory specialising in analytical testing for the food, pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. This can verify their contents and screen for contaminants such as heavy metals, adulterants, or undeclared pharmaceutical substances, providing additional reassurance about the quality of the products you are taking.
