Notable Constituents:
- Cordycepin
Adenosine 3'-deoxyribonucleoside with multiple biological activities and applications, but unfortunately, it is suspected to be from other organisms present in wild harvested forms of O. sinensis, e.g. Aspergillus nidulans, since it is absent in cultured varieties (Yang et al., 2010) and it lacks the gene associated with its synthesis (Xia et al., 2017) that is found in Cordyceps militaris.
- Myriocin
Found in Isaria sinclairii, the anamorph (asexual stage) of which Cordyceps is the telemorph (sexual stage). It is an amino acid-based antibiotic which also displays anti-fungal, immunosuppressive properties and is a potent inhibitor of sphingosine, required to make phospholipids for cell membranes. It modulates the immune system by modulating the sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor, sequestering lymphocytes in the lymph nodes and preventing them from contributing to an autoimmune reaction. It has been isolated and sold as the drug Fingolimod used for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.
Notes:
Originally a Tibetan medicine mentioned in the 15th century Ten Millions of Instructions: a Relic by Zurkhar Nyamnyi Dorje (Boesi & Cardi, 2009). Its traditional Tibetan energetics are sweet (mngar mo) and salty (lan tshwa ba), its post-digestive taste is sweet, its potency is unctuous (oily; snum) and hot (drod). The fungus has the properties of increasing the energy of the body, of restoring semen functionality, and of increasing its production. It also increases kidney strength and heat, it cures all the disorders caused by unbalance of
the humor wind (rlung nad) and the disorders caused by unbalance of the humor bile (mkhris nad). It also prevents increasing of the humour phlegm (bad kan).

Reference Notes:
Individual herb information has sourced mainly from TCM Wiki and American Dragon for basic data and then updated manually with my own notes. Zhou, Xie and Yan (2011): Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicines, Vol. 5, has been used for entries not available from those sources with additional material searched for and filled in where available. Western herbs not appearing in the Chinese literature have used Ross (2010): Combining Western Herbs and Chinese Medicine: A Clinical Materia Medica, White Rabbit Institute of Healing and therapeutika.ch. Choices of which source to use or combine have been my own.
