Notes:
Historically, Li Shizhen describes using boy or girl to blow air through a cloth into the umbilicus which he considers to be "very effective" (tr. Luo 2003, p. 4176). It could be argued that "blowing into the umbilicus" could mean through the mouth or nose to make the belly rise, in which case, this first method could describe an early version of CPR.
Another alchemical practice was to have a maiden blow air into the nostrils, umbilicus and penis of an old man to connect the three Dan Tian but he is critical of this metiod, calling it a "small skill" and warns that it carries risk of great harm if performed incorrectly (ibid.).

Reference Notes:
Individual herb information has sourced mainly from TCM Wiki and American Dragon for basic data and then updated manually with my own notes. Zhou, Xie and Yan (2011): Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicines, Vol. 5, and A+ Medical Encyclopaedia have been used for entries not available from those sources with additional material searched for and filled in where available. Western herbs not appearing in the Chinese literature have used Ross (2010): Combining Western Herbs and Chinese Medicine: A Clinical Materia Medica, White Rabbit Institute of Healing and therapeutika.ch. Choices of which source to use or combine have been my own.
