Five Taxations (五勞, Wu Lao)

The Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen Ch. 23 lists the five taxations as:

  1. To observe over a long time harms the Blood.
  2. To lie down for a long time harms the Qi.
  3. To sit for a long time harms the flesh.
  4. To stand for a long time harms the bones.
  5. To walk for a long time harms the sinews. (Trans: Unschuld and Tessenow, 2011).
In later texts the five taxations were attributed the five Zang that govern each substance: 1. Heart, 2. Lung, 3. Spleen, 4. Kidneys, 5. Liver. They are often paired with the Seven Injuries to make the Five Taxations and Seven Injuries (五勞七傷, Wu Lao Qi Shang). See also the Twelve Excesses (十二淫, Shi Er Yin) of Sun Simiao.
