Du Shen Tang

Unaccompanied Ginseng Decoction

Category: Formulas that Warm Interior Cold

Pattern: Qi collapse following loss of Blood

Key Symptoms: Acute severe blood loss or heart failure with extremely pale complexion, lethargic state, cold extremities, excessive sweating, weak breathing

Pulse: Faint or thin, almost imperceptable


Ingredients

Ren Shen 20-30g
Da Zao 5pc

Subsitutions:
One version of this formula replaces Da Zao with 30g of brown sugar.


Preparation: Decoct in 300 ml of water until 150 ml remain.


Actions: Tonifies the Yuan Qi, stabilizes collapse

Contraindications: Chronic patterns (for which Shen Fu Tang is appropriate)



Notes:
Patients presenting with this pattern should be referred to the emergency room.

It is included here as an adjunct or addition to regular care (although caution: if the patient is put on blood thinners, they interact with Ginseng), or to be modified and incorporated into other formulae if the the Yuan Qi is deficient.

It can also be modified to include any other "Shen 参" herb, all of which can be used as remedies in themselves without incorporation of a formula.
