Yu Zhen San

Category: Formulas that Expel Wind

Pattern: Muscular tetany due to Wind and Toxin invading the body through a wound or ulceration.

Key Symptoms: Stiffness and spasms of the jaw, closed mouth, lip spasms, deviation of the eyes, rigidity of the entire body to the point of opisthotonus

Pulse: Wiry and tight


Ingredients

Bai Fu Zi
Tian Nan Xing
Qiang Huo
Bai Zhi
Fang Feng
Tian Ma

Subsitutions:
In the UK Bai Fu Zi cannot be used. It is probably best substituted with a higher dose of Tian Nan Xing or the relative higher proportion of all the other herbs in each measure if it is simply omitted.


Preparation: Equal amounts ground into powder and taken in 6g doses with hot wine. Today they are usually taken in 3g doses with hot wine, although it may also be prepared as a decoction or applied externally the affected area.


Actions: Dispels Wind, transforms Phlegm, relieves muscular tetany, alleviates pain

Contraindications: Since this uses unprepared Bai Fu Zi and Tian Nan Xing which are both highly toxic dosage should be carefully monitored and it should not be taken long term or during pregnancy. Its acrid ingredients are also drying making unsuitable for advanced stages of tetany. Spasms caused by blood loss preventing nourishment of the sinews should also be treated by nourishing the Blood and the formula modified accordingly.
