Pattern: Damp-Heat dysenteric disorder damaging Yin and Yang

Key Symptoms: Discharge of blood and pus from the bowels (may be mixed up together) that comes and goes with tenesmus, abdominal pain, irritability of the chest

Tongue: Red body with little coating
Pulse: Thin and rapid


Ingredients

Huang Lian 180g
Gan Jiang 60g
Dang Gui 90g
E Jiao 90g

Subsitutions:
In the UK E Jiao must be substituted. Sheng Di Huang and Bai Shao would also nourish Blood and Yin while stopping bleeding and relieving abdominal pain and spasms.


Preparation: Grind the herbs into a powder and mix with 3 year old vinegar and make into pills. Take 30 pills twice daily. 6-9g of pills are usually taken 2-3 times per day with rice broth or warm water. Can also be prepared as a decoction with a reduction in dosages.


Actions: Drains Heat, fried Dampness, nourishes the Yin and stops dysenteric disorders

Contraindications: Initial stages of a dysenteric disorder where treatment should focus on eliminated the pathogenic Qi. The source text also advises to avoid pork, cold beverages or greasy food while taking this formula.
