Fu Xiao Mai are the grains of wheat which float to the surface in water due to not ripening sufficiently.

As wheat is the grain associated with the Heart and the floating quality of the blighted grains is associated with deficiency making it unable to ripen, it is used to treat deficiency conditions affecting the exterior, namely spontaneous sweats from Qi deficiency and night sweats from Yin deficiency.

Huai Xiao Mai, the grains that sink, are therefore better at nourishing the Heart and calming the Shen in cases of visceral agitation, vexation and sadness.
