Category: Formulas that Clear Heat

Pattern: Warm-Heat pathogen disorders, epidemic Summerheat and poxes with severe Heat-Toxin

Key Symptoms: Fever with delirious speech, deep purple rashes, redness of the eyes, irritability

Tongue: Scarlet coating (sometimes with black coating)


Ingredients

Shui Niu Jiao 450g
Sheng Di Huang 450g
Jin Yin Hua 450g
Lian Qiao 300g
Ban Lan Gen 270g
Huang Qin 180g
Shi Chang Pu 180g
Dan Dou Chi 240g
Tian Hua Fen 120g
Xuan Shen 210g
Zi Cao 120g

Subsitutions:
In the UK several ingredients must be substituted:

Shui Niu Jiao (itself a substitute for Xi Jiao which is endangered) == Xian Shen + Huang Lian at 3:1 ratio (or add Huang Lian and increase Xuan Shen as appropriate)
Zi Cao (banned due to fears of pyrrolizidine alkaloids) could be substituted with toxic heat clearing leafy herbs like Da Qing Ye (although it already contains Ban Lan Gen, the root of the same plant), Zi Hua Di Ding or Ye Ju Hua.


Preparation: Ground into powder and mixed with juice of fresh Rehmannia to form into pills.


Actions: Clears Heat, opens up the orifices, cools the Blood, resolves Fire Toxicity
