Wen Pi Tang

Warm the Spleen Decoction

Category: Formulas that Drain Downward

Pattern: Spleen Cold from Yang deficiency with accumulation impeding the intestines.

Key Symptoms: Constipation or diarrhoea


Ingredients

Hou Po 15g
Pao Jiang 15g
Gan Cao 15g
Rou Gui 15g
Zhi Fu Zi 15g
Da Huang 15g

Subsitutions:
In the UK Fu Zi must be substituted. The standard substitution would be Gang Jiang and an increased dose of Rou Gui but other Yang tonics, substances that warm Interior Cold and help purge the bowel could be considered. If the presentation is constipation then Rou Cong Rong or Suo Yang could be considered. If diarrhoea then herbs like Yi Zhi Ren or Bu Gu Zhi may be appropriate.


Preparation: Grind into a powder and prepare as a draft. Add Da Huang near the end.


Actions: Warms and Tonifies Spleen Yang and purges Cold accumulation.

Contraindications: Constipation due to Interior Heat with clumping and damage to body fluids.
