Category: Formulas that Dispel Phlegm

Pattern: Chronic and stubborn Phlegm-Heat in a person with a weak constitution

Key Symptoms: Dian Kuang (mania and withdrawal or bipolar disorder), severe palpitations with unconsciousness, coughing and wheezing with thick sputum, dysphagia with irritability and oppressive fullness in the chest and epigastrium, dizziness and tinnitus, nodules around the neck, erratic movements of the eyes and mouth, insomnia or sleep disturbed with bizarre dreams, severe stabbing pain in the joints, constipation, fatigue.

Tongue: Thick yellow coating
Pulse: Slippery and rapid


Ingredients

Zhi Ban Xia 60g
Ren Shen 30g
Fu Ling 60g
Bai Zhu 90g
Huang Qin 90g
Da Huang 90g
Zhi Gan Cao 30g
Chen Xiang 15g
Meng Shi 30g

Subsitutions:
In the UK Meng Shi must be substituted with Xia Ku Cao and Tian Zhu Huang. Chen Xiang is often substituted with Hou Po due to cost and availability.


Preparation: Grind into a powder and form into pills using Zhu Li (bamboo sap) and Jiang Zhi (ginger juice).


Actions: Directs Fire downwards, drives out Phlegm, augments the Qi and supports the normal Qi.
