Category: Formulas that are Applied Externally

Pattern: Shattered bones and severed sinews

Key Symptoms: Severe pain and swelling in the limbs

Ingredients

Dang Gui 22.5g
Chuan Xiong 15g
Ru Xiang 7.5g
Mo Yao 7.5g
Mu Xiang 3g
Chuan Wu 13.5g
Huang Dan 18g
Gu Sui Bu 15g

Subsitutions:
Huang Dan should be substituted or removed due to being a toxic lead oxide compound. Xue Jie might be a suitable alternative for assisting flesh regeneration and invigorating blood, while still being a red powder.

Although Chuan Wu can be used externally in the UK, the possible toxicity of aconite species may also make it undesirable in less severe situations, in which case the addition of some essential oils which assist with pain such as wintergreen and peppermint, lavender or lemongrass might make milder alternatives.

Preparation: Grind all the ingredients into a powder and put in 30 ml of sesame oil. Mix it into an ointment and stick to the affected site.

Actions: Removes channel obstructions, regulates Qi and Blood and alleviates pain.
